Sometimes – especially in winter , it is hard to motivate myself to get out the door and be active. Now that I have Wiley I am walking at least five times a day. Some are shorter walks to relieve himself but there is at least one 5km walk each day.
I do not respond to being yelled at, am not overly encouraged with motivational words but I will get up and be out the door within two minutes of Wiley putting his head on my knee and asking to go out.
If for some reason our morning walk has been cut short then Wiley will be a little restless later in the afternoon. Just knowing he is itching to get moving is enough reason for me to put on my walking shoes and get up the bush.
I also make a big effort to get to all the Achilles training sessions as I know Wiley enjoys his walks around the lake while I am off running. If it wasn’t for him I am sure I would occasionally decide to stay home listening to an audio book, baking or having a sleep in.
Knowing that Wiley needs to keep up with his guiding work will also see me out and about even if the errand I am doing could wait another day or two.
Looking back I wish I had put on a pedometer every time Wiley and I stepped out the door as I’d be keen to know how far we walked in a year. I’d estimate we’d cover at least 7km a day, so times that by 365 and we get 2555 km. According to a google search that means I have burned over 116000 calories – that has certainly helped to offset some of calories I’ve consumed eating chocolate.:)
More research on google tells me walking is a great form of exercise. Amongst other things it can ….
- help to lose body fat and maintain a healthy weight,
- improve fitness
- reduce the risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.
- reduce high blood pressure
- Increase muscle strength and endurance and lead to stronger bones and improved balance
- improve sleep
- lower stress
- increase energy
So Wiley has no doubt improved my health and fitness, just one of the many benefits of having him as part of my life. Thanks Wiley!
Meanwhile what we have been up to …..
The last few days have included a walk to the farmers markets, some letter box dropping, a trip to Bunnings and a really lovely long 2 hour bush work. This afternoon I have plan to catch up with my parents and their little yorkshire terrier.
